“Unsanded” Target Ball

American

Citron or Yellowish-Green

Provenance: Ex: Ralph Finch Collection, American Glass Gallery

Within an adjacent display case in the Target Ball Gallery, we have a deep teal, almost peacock blue example of a PATD SEPT 25th 1877 target ball which is referred to as the “Sand Ball.”

See the museum example of a Patd Sept 25th 1877 “Sand Ball”

“Sand Balls” balls have the embossed patent date copy around the shoulder and were covered with a sand finished surface, which prevented the shot from glancing away from the ball. The sandy surface also cut down on the reflection of light from its surface making it easier to see.

The example we are looking at now is much rarer as this ball is “Unsanded.” The patent actually called for the ball to be rolled in sand, but this example was not.

Support: Auction Lot 722: “PATD SEPT 25th 1877” (around the shoulder), Target Ball, America, 1877 – 1900. Bright yellowish-green or citron coloration, 3-piece mold, rough sheared mouth, dia. 2 5/8”, perfect. A very rare ball in a fantastic, eye-appealing color. The patent for this ball calls for it to be rolled in sand, but this example was not. A very desirable ball, beautiful color, outstanding clarity, and condition. – American Glass Gallery, The Ralph Finch Collection of Target Balls, Traps and Shooting Ephemera, An Absentee Auction in Six Parts – 2017-2019
