Soda Pops & Soft Drinks Gallery

Soft drinks, also referred to as sodas, soda pops, colas, and pops, contain no alcohol and are usually carbonated and contain sweeteners.  They are called “soft” in contrast with “hard” alcoholic drinks. The earliest bottled soft drinks were produced by J Schweppe in 1783. A particular challenge to early production was manufacturing a seal that would hold the pressure of carbonation, and several designs including Codd and Hutchinson were prominent through the 1800s until the Crown Cork Bottle Seal was patented in 1892. From the 1930s through the 1980s, Applied Color Label (ACL) sodas featured ceramic-enamel paint fused onto the glass rather than paper labels and embossing.
